- PhD prize which will be awarded to PhDs on Scottish literature submitted outside of the UK (written in English or other languages)
- Awarded every 3 years, at every IASSL World Congress, with submissions from the previous 2 years
- First award: Philadelphia, June 2027; submissions: PhDs defended in June 2024-June 2026
- Second award: 2029 IASSL World Congress: PhDs defended in June 2026-June 2028.
- Prize: 300 £
Conditions for submission:
- The PhD can focus on any aspect of Scottish literature; it can be partly on Scottish literature, but the Scottish element shouldn’t be incidental or used as an illustration: at least half of the dissertation should be devoted to Scottish literature.
- Submission can be made at any time during the period covered by the current award.
- Each submission includes: a PDF of the defended PhD, a summary in English of the thesis (max. 500 words for a thesis in English; extended summary of up to 4,000-5,000 words is the thesis is not written in English)
Criteria used by the panel to judge:
- Quality of the research
- Originality of the topic
- Contribution to research in the field
- Bibliography

- Chairperson (member of the IASSL Executive Committee)
- IASSL Convener
- IASSL Secretary
- Member of Board of Trustees
- Members of IASSL (invited by the chairperson)
