PhD & ECR Bursaries for Nanjing 2027

IASSL is grateful for the generous donations from UCSL and EUP to support travel bursaries for doctoral students and early career researchers to enable them to attend the 5th World Congress of Scottish Literatures in Nanjing in 2027. Please find the Call for Papers here. There will be 2 bursaries of £450 for PhD students and 2 of £300 for ECRs.

Eligibility:

  • PhD: researchers up to one year after the viva
  • ECR: any research position where the researcher is not on an academic salary

If you wish to apply, please follow these instructions:

Submit a proposal for a paper by the deadline given in the CfP (30 November 2026) to nj2027iassl@126.com.

Accompany that submission with a personal statement, including:

For doctoral students: your thesis topic; the year of your PhD, including date of the viva if that is already arranged or has already taken place; details of any scholarships you are already in receipt of, and a short explanation of why the opportunity to attend the congress in Nanjing would help your research and/or career development. Include a letter of support from your supervisor.

For ECRs: a description of your current project, how it is funded, whether or not that funding includes an allowance for travel to conferences and, if so, how much, and a short explanation of why the opportunity to attend the congress in Nanjing would help your research and/or career development. Include a letter of support from your mentor or whoever oversees your project as advisor.

If you have already submitted a paper proposal to the congress, you can submit your personal statement and the letter of support separately to the same address (nj2027iassl@126.com).

Kindly use ‘PhD/ECR fund application’ as the subject of your e-mail.
